The message from Pastor Carter on Sunday couldnt have come at a better time than now… lately i have been feeling down, or depressed about certain things, resulting in my overall discouraged mood… yet i’ve still masked it with a smile or a laugh from time to time, but i knew all along that wasn’t the case.
Discouragement is one of the greatest tools Satan uses in your life. It can weigh you down, but what does God’s Word say about it?
the sermon was taught from Matthew 11:2-6 when the disciples were sent by John to ask Jesus if He was the one that had been performing all of these great works such as healing the sick, giving the blind sight, raising the dead, cleansing the lepers, giving the deaf hearing, etc. Jesus told them to tell John that it was He who had been performing such works. starting in the 2nd verse i started to see how this message was connecting to me and discouragement.
-in verses 2 and 3, the disciples ask Jesus if He is the one? this is can be related to how we (I) sometimes wrestle with life’s questions. We sometimes allow our discouragement to question our own faith in God? “Can i trust you Lord?” “Will you make a way this time Lord?” Sometimes we even try to take matters in our hands and try to run our lives, without checking in with God. Discouragement has a way of making your feel disappointed in your life. things aren’t as good as you want them to be. And then you look around and you see people better off than you. better car, better job, better relationship, home life, etc.
A good friend of mine came to me earlier this week and we talked about something similar to this where somebody next to you might have it better than you do, and what makes it worse, is that you may be praying for things to get better in your life, staying faithful to God, reading your Word, and yet the people around you that has it better, may not be doing the same things you’re doing, like praying to God, and reading the Word. leading into more discouragement, and even worse than that…. depression…
Thats somewhere i have been before quite many times, its not a good place to be, you feel like you are in a funk. You feel like everyone else around you has it better. You start to feel unappreciated, like you don’t get the credit that you deserve for living the way you do, or striving to live the way that you should.
…and thats where verses 4 and 5 come in..
–And Jesus answered them “Go and tell John what you hear and see: that the blind received their sight, and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to him.” Matthew 11:4-5 (ESV)
In life we have to ‘Learn how to wait on an answer’ When we let discouragement take over our minds, it begins to cloud up the airway between God and us. Our minds become consumed with thoughts of worry and doubt. Impatience sets in, and we tend to waver in our faith. But we have to look to God’s Word where what Jesus is telling John through His disciples of His great works is nothing short of fulfillment and confirmation of what God had already promised in Isaiah..
Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you.” Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it. It shall belong to those who walk on the way; even if they are fools, they shall not go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Isaiah 35:4-10 (ESV)
Jesus is the Messiah!! As Pastor Carter said, “When your situation has you looking down, remember Jesus Christ says look up!”
We have to realize that we are children of God, and His word simply says to cast your cares on Him for He cares for us!! (1 Peter 5:7) He will never forsake us! Jesus tells us later in Matthew 11 to Come to Him, and He will give us rest, Take His yoke, and learn from Him, for He is lowly and gentle in heart, and He will give us rest for our weary souls. For His yoke is easy, and burden is light. (Verses 28-30)
As a child of God i have to remind myself that I God has ALL power, and if it is time for me to wait on Him, i need to wait, (previous blog) and if its time to step up and hear to His calling, i have to be ready. But either way, i cant allow myself to remain discouraged. God is bigger than any of my problems or reasons in life to be discouraged. After all, I’m still here. God has a purpose and a plan for me, or else i wouldnt be here.
Maybe you’re reading this and are feeling the same way, just know, God is not through with you yet. He is not through blessing you, He is not through taking you through a test, so you can have a testimony, He is not through with you yet, If you’re reading this, you’re still here! and God still has great things for you in your future!!
finally the last point on defeating your discouragement, was that we have to ‘Walk by Faith’
the bible tells us that we should walk by faith, not by sight. ( 2 Corinthians 5:7)
In Matthew, verse 6 simply says Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me. (NIV)
the CEVversion says God will bless everyone who does not reject me (Jesus) because of what I do….
in life, we wont always understand how God works, just like most of the up to date technology gadgets we use today works, (but better) , but if we trust and believe by faith that God is working everything out in our favor, than we must truly realize that God works. WE don’t necessarily have to understand and know why/how He works, as long as we know God works!!
knowing that everything works together for the good of them that love God and those who are called according to His purpose, walking by Faith, (have to activate it first, 2Cor5:7, Heb 11:1), Learning how to wait for an answer, and Don’t wrestle w/ life’s questions but give it God….
thats how you can Defeat your Discouragement!
One of the most important things you can ever do is think the right way about God. -A.W. Tozer
